Prof Teede received the joint award with co-nominee Dr Sarah Whitelaw, for leadership, influence and significant contributions to health and healthcare services and outcomes by centering women’s leadership and gender equity and diversity as foundational pillars to excellence in the delivery of healthcare, health system performance, health and medical research, education and training.
Led by Prof Teede, Advancing Women in Healthcare Leadership (AWHL), is a $5 Million Partnership Centre working with 24 partners and collaborators to advance gender equity and leadership in medicine and healthcare.
Professor Steve Robson is the president of the AMA and presented the joint award to Prof Teede and Dr Whitelaw at the AMA Conference on 3 August on the Gold Coast.
“Women are underrepresented in leadership in medicine, and this award recognises Prof Teede’s ongoing commitment to advancing the knowledge and improving leadership outcomes for women in medical leadership. Congratulations to Prof Teede,” he said.
Professor Teede said she was honoured to receive the award on behalf of the AWHL team.
“I would like to acknowledge the AWHL team for generating the evidence that is needed for systems and organisational change in the workplace, to advance women into leadership and deliver on gender equity in medicine,” she said.
“Thank you to our 24 supportive partners, and the AMA for recognising this important research and implementation which is impacting our health care system, knowing that organisations with greater diversity in leadership deliver better health care.”
The initial AWHL initiative was funded by the NHMRC in 2019 with nine partners. It has grown to a $5 Million dollar Partnership Centre with 24 partners across professional, medical and nursing colleges, industrial bodies, leading health services, government, and academia. AWHL’s Educational Program has supported over 2,000 women in leadership training, including in the evidence-based Women in Leadership Program which is internationally recognised and is training women in health and medical sciences worldwide.
