$4.6 Million Boost for the Health of Australian Mothers and Babies

Professor Helena Teede and Associate Professor Aya Mousa have been awarded $3 million and $1.6 million NHMRC Investigator Grants respectively, for women's health and implementation research. 

Director of the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation (MCHRI), Prof. Teede was awarded another Level 3 Leadership Grant, which was scored as a Category 7, ranked in the top few nationally in the NHMRC Investigator Grant Leadership scheme.   

A/Prof. Mousa, a mid-career researcher, has been awarded an Emerging Leadership 2 Grant, the second most competitive category in this year’s scheme with a national funded rate of just 11.0%, marking her second consecutive NHMRC fellowship.

Professor Teede’s grant – Implementation research and impact: Optimising reproductive metabolic health including in high risk pregnancies – will investigate rising pregnancy complications caused by metabolic and reproductive health conditions under the National Maternity Learnings Health System. She will also advance research and drive implementation and guidelines on polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (formerly PCOS).

“With rising obesity, we face a global epidemic of adverse reproductive metabolic health outcomes including polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, infertility and pregnancy complications, yet the interplay between metabolic and reproductive health is poorly appreciated.” 

“Here, new knowledge will define these impacts, identify those at greatest risk and uncover effective interventions that can be implemented to prevent and treat these conditions and to improve the health of women and children,” she said.

She will also advance research and partnerships on gender equality in leadership to foster the next generation of women in healthcare and health and medical sciences leadership.

A/Prof. Mousa’s Emerging Leadership 2 Grant – Precision Medicine in Gestational Diabetes: Exploring Insulin Physiology and Heterogeneity – will investigate metabolic pregnancy disorders such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) which is driven by the body’s inability to regulate insulin and affects 1 in 5 Australian pregnancies.

“Despite affecting women differently, GDM is treated with a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. My globally recognised research program will clarify how insulin actions and related risks impact GDM and its complications, and will test a new precision approach to optimise treatment, reduce unnecessary insulin use and costs, and improve outcomes for women and their babies,” she said.

MCHRI is an internationally recognised women’s health and implementation Monash University and Monash Health Partnership Centre, and this funding will further strengthen its leadership and impact.
